Welcome to the seventh episode of season two of Medals & More, the podcast taking you behind the scenes of British Olympic and Paralympic sport.
Hosted by Dame Katherine Grainger, Britain’s most decorated female Olympian and Chair of UK Sport, Medals & More will inspire, engage and educate you with insights and stories from the Olympic and Paralympic high-performance community and beyond.
Friday 7 May 2021 saw the launch of UK Sport's new strategic plan, and to celebrate the announcement, Katherine welcomes three guests with differing backgrounds in the shape of Sebastian Coe, Georgina Usher and Sam Parfitt.
Lord Coe needs little introduction having won a gold medal at the 1980 and 1984 Olympic Games, and he has since gone on to hold a number of influential positions across the world of high performance sport. Georgina is CEO at British Fencing, a role she has held since 2014 while Sam is CEO of the True Athlete Project which aims to improve and develop athletes both on and off the field of play.
The True Athlete Project is a US and UK based nonprofit which aims to build a more compassionate world through sport. Their team design and deliver a range of holistic sports programming which aim to show how high performance, mental wellbeing and social impact are not mutually exclusive.
British Fencing and The True Athlete Project have been working together since 2019 and in this episode Georgina and Sam share the journey so far and the impact it is having on the organisation as a whole as well as their coaches and athletes. Together they released a series of eight videos exploring elements of The True Athlete Project’s collaboration with British Fencing. You can watch how British athletes have embedded a socially conscious, whole-person approach into their pathway journeys here.
