Glasgow 2014: Day ten round-up

Published 2 August 2014

The penultimate day of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow was another record breaker for the home nations as they won a total of 33 medals. There were golden moments on the diving board, on the track and at the table tennis but nowhere could match the boxing ring at the SECC where nine gold medals were won.

Olympic champion Nicola Adams (Eng) made history again by becoming the first female boxing champion at a Commonwealth Games. She was joined shortly afterward by team mate Savannah Marshall who overcame her disappointment at London 2012 to win the women’s middleweight division. The English men were not to be outdone as Scott Fitzgerald, Anthony Fowler and Joe Joyce won golds along with Scotland’s Josh Taylor and Charlie Flynn. Northern Ireland won their first gold medals of the Games, with Paddy Barnes and Michael topping the podium.

In Athletics, England’s Conrad Williams, Michael Bingham, Daniel Awde and Matthew Hudson-Smith won a nail biting 4x400m Relay with the tightest of victories over the Bahamas. Diver Tom Daley was very impressive as he took top spot in the Men’s 10m Platform and husband wife team of Paul and Joanna Drinkhall won the Mixed Doubles in the Table Tennis.
