Job Description
Triathlon England (TE) is an unincorporated division of the British Triathlon Federation (BTF), entrusted with driving the growth, development and success of triathlon across England, the Channel Islands, and the Isle of Man. Oversight of TE’s activities is provided by the Triathlon England Management Board (TEMB); TE is committed to inspiring participation and excellence at all levels of the sport. The Chair holds a pivotal leadership role - shaping strategic direction, championing effective governance and fostering a strong values-driven culture to ensure triathlon can thrive.

The role of Chair offers a unique opportunity to shape the future of triathlon in England, making a lasting impact on the sport and its community.

Responsibilities:

Governance and Leadership
• Serve as a Director of Triathlon England, fulfilling fiduciary duties with integrity and transparency
• Lead and facilitate TEMB meetings, setting impactful agendas in collaboration with the CEO, ensuring balanced, effective and timely decision-making
• Represent TE as a member of the BTF Board and attend BTF Board meetings and other BTF Board discussions, as required
• Participate in such Committees of the TEMB and BTF Board as the Boards shall decide, engaging actively to advance the organisations objectives
• Uphold the highest standards of governance, ensuring compliance with the Code for Sports Governance and other relevant regulatory frameworks
• Safeguard legal, regulatory, and ethical compliance across all TE activities
• Ensure TE’s business decisions align with TE’s values, mission, and long-term strategic goals
• Approve access to independent advice, when necessary, to support robust governance and decision making
Strategy and Oversight
• Lead the development and oversight of TE’s strategic vision, ensuring clear priorities and measurable outcomes
• Oversee the effective management and performance of TE, monitoring progress and holding the executive team accountable for delivery against strategic objectives
• Champion diversity, equity and inclusion throughout the sport, community and organisation
• Inspire cultural innovation, continuous improvement, and collaboration to support the growth and sustainability of triathlon
• Support the recruitment and development of the CEO and senior leadership in partnership with the BTF chair

Stakeholder Engagement
• Serve as a visible and influential ambassador for Triathlon England, building strong relationships with key stakeholders, partners, and the wider triathlon community
• Foster open relationships with the Advisory Council and ensure representation of diverse perspectives
Board Effectiveness
• Ensure responsibilities are delegated appropriately and decisions are minuted and actioned
• Promote financial probity and ethical conduct across all activities
• Lead annual performance reviews of the Board and its Committees
• Provide tailored induction and proactively support the ongoing development needs of board members
• Ensure timely, accurate, and transparent communication across the TEMB, facilitating access to all relevant information needed for sound decision making and effective governance.

Person Specification:
Key Skills and Experience
• Proven experience as Chair, Director, Trustee, or Committee Member in commercial, public, or voluntary settings.
• Deep strategic leadership experience, ideally with organisational governance in a sport or membership context.
• Preferred good working knowledge of triathlon but importantly the sport sector and sports funding models.
• Track record of building influential partnerships and managing senior-level relationships.
• Confident public speaker and media spokesperson.

• Visionary, dynamic, and resilient, with strategic perspective.

• Willingness to invest time and energy as an ambassador and resource for the organisation.
