UK Sport is committed to achieving equality in sport

Equity is about recognising and removing the barriers faced by people involved, or wanting to be involved in sport. It is about changing the culture of sport to one that values diversity and enables the full involvement of disadvantaged groups in every aspect of sport.

UK Sport Equality Statement

UK Sport embraces the spirit of all equalities legislation and is committed to eradicating any form of unfair discrimination. We will not tolerate discrimination either directly or indirectly, on the grounds of race, disability, class or social background, religious belief, sexual orientation, ethnic or national origins, gender, marital status, pregnancy, parental status, age, colour or political persuasion.

UK Sport will take positive action to:

  • eliminate individual and institutional discrimination
  • comply with statutory/legislative obligations and, wherever possible, best practice
  • meet the needs of our employees and partner organisations
  • make equality and equal treatment a core issue in the development, delivery and refinement of our policies, initiatives and services and in the way we manage our employees.

UK Sport is committed to achieving equality in sport and is taking a proactive approach in this area. It is a central principle of a dynamic and modern sports organisation that can demonstrate democratic governance with progressive strategies and programmes.

To underline our commitment, UK Sport:

  • Has developed an Equality Strategy and Policy, and Race, Gender and Disability Equality Schemes that will ensure we meet our legal obligations as well as establishing equality principles and policies within UK Sport and our work with partner organisations
  • Will seek to collate and disseminate good practice from across the UK, including the work of Home Country Sports Councils and equity organisations
  • Developed, in partnership with home country sports councils, CCPR and equity organisations, The Equality Standard: A Framework for Sport
  • Co-ordinated the development of the UK Strategy Framework for Women and Sport and produced two monitoring reports against objectives and targets, in 2004 and 2006
  • Will continue to represent the UK in equality issues and good practice to the international sport and equality movement
  • Has formed partnerships with equality agencies including Stonewall, Leeds Metropolitan University and Women's Sports Foundation.
