The European Fencing Championship 2011 will take place this year at the England Institute of Sport, Sheffield (14-19 July).
This will be the first time that the Senior European Championships will take place on UK soil and will combine events both able-bodied and wheelchair fencing.
Event Director, John Timms, said: “We are on schedule to deliver an exciting championship for all our stakeholders and one which all in British fencing can be proud.”
Piers Martin, Chief Executive of British Fencing, added: “Sheffield 2011 is great opportunity for our fencers to compete in front of a home crowd ahead of the Olympics and Paralympics in 2012, and just as importantly it will give our organisers and hard working volunteers valuable experience which will leave a lasting legacy for our sport in Sheffield and across the country. This will be the first time we run the event with Wheelchair Fencing and I hope everyone will come and support some of the world’s and Europe’s finest athletes and give all our British fencers the boost they need.”
Fencing and Wheelchair Fencing were brought together successfully at last year’s World Championships in Paris.
British Disability Fencing Association’s Performance Manager, Justine Wilmott said: “BDFA is really pleased that an integrated able-bodied and Wheelchair Fencing Europeans will be held in the UK for the first time. Hosting such a major event on home soil in 2011 will play an important part in the performance preparations for GB fencers in the lead into the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics”.
