Eating Disorders in Sport

Eating disorders are complex, serious and multi-faceted medical conditions. Whether or not they occur in a sporting context, they will seriously compromise the health of the sufferer and can be life-threatening…

What follows is not an exhaustive ‘to do’ list, nor even a set of instructions to deal with every eventuality. Instead, UK Sport have tried to produce a document that will help the reader to understand why eating disorders might be a problem in sport, how the risks of developing an eating disorder can be reduced by good practices, how problems can be identified at an early stage, and what could be done once a problem is identified. The document should be read as a source of information and as a guideline for prevention, detection and risk management in the area of eating disorders in high performance sport. UK Sport hope that you find it helpful.

This document was first published in 2007.
