UK Sport host ‘Mission East’ conference as high performance system targets further Olympic and Paralympic success

Published 16 March 2017

UK Sport will today host its Mission: East conference in London which will see the high performance sector gather to target further Olympic and Paralympic success.

The event, sponsored by Sportscover, will see around 300 athletes and staff working in high performance sport come together and exchange ideas as UK Sport looks to build on success in Sochi and Rio at the next three Olympic and Paralympic Games at PyeongChang 2018, Tokyo 2020 and Beijing 2022.

Mission: East comes six months after a hugely successful Rio 2016 where Great Britain became the first nation to increase both its Olympic and Paralympic medal haul post-hosting the Games and finished second on both medal tables with 214 medals overall and 255 medallists.

Mission: East will host delegates from 37 different National Governing Bodies (NGBs) as well as the British Olympic Association (BOA), the British Paralympic Association (BPA) and the English Institute of Sport (EIS).

Mission: East will feature welcome addresses from UK Sport CEO Liz Nicholl, GB Hockey’s Olympic gold medallist Alex Danson and Director of Performance Chelsea Warr while a series of workshops, across all areas of UK Sport’s work with sports, will be staged across the day as the high performance system prepares for the start of the Tokyo 2020 cycle in April.

UK Sport CEO Liz Nicholl said: “Following the fantastic achievements at Rio 2016, Mission: East provides a perfect opportunity for the UK high performance system to gather together and target further Olympic and Paralympic success in Pyeongchang 2018, Tokyo 2020 and Beijing 2022.

“Our system in the UK is world leading. We know what it takes to win but there is no sign of complacency. Everyone knows that it can be even better. Today is about reflecting, realigning our focus on excellence and working together to create a system we can all be proud of - one that is responsible and inspirational."
