Glasgow 2014: Day Nine round-up

Published 1 August 2014

New heroes were born as the home nations success in Athletics, Boxing, Diving and Gymnastics helped the flow of medals continue on Day Nine of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

It was another superb day of Gymnastics as young Claudia Fragapane secured her fourth gold medal of the games, becoming the first English women to do so in 84 years. Scotland’s Dan Purvis also won gold, in the Men’s Parallel Bars, completing his own personal clean sweep of medals.

There was a splash in the pool as Team England brought home three medals in the Diving. Jack Laugher secured his second gold with partner Chris Mears and third medal of the Games, whilst Tom Daley took silver with James Denny.

But it was the ring that saw the most action with no fewer than 13 medals won on the night, with each and every bout tightly fought and won on small margins. Team Northern Ireland and Team Wales both winning five medals apiece.

The home nations ended Day Nine strongly, securing 35 medals and out for more on Day Ten.
