Just two weeks into the New Year, UK Sport has today launched its 2006 Annual Review. The 60 page document looks back over a landmark year for the organisation, which included major changes to the sporting landscape and the success of securing significant extra funds from the Government for Olympic and Paralympic sports ahead of London 2012.
The Review details the wide range of work being done by staff across the UK’s high performance sports agency and in particular the impact the increased responsibility for the Performance Pathway has had in creating a ‘one-stop shop’ for performance sport in the UK, thereby allowing the organisation to focus even more on helping UK Sport’s partners deliver medal success on the world stage.
John Steele, UK Sport’s Chief Executive, said:
“After the sheer excitement of the 2012 Games being won in 2005, for all those involved the past year has been about getting into shape to deliver. For UK Sport that has meant taking a hard look across all our activity and examining what we are doing well and what needs to be better if we are to respond to the enormous challenges that have been set. I am confident that we have made a great start, but there is plenty more to be done if we are to ensure the step change in delivery required to meet our ambitions for high performance sport in this country.”
Alongside the performance activity, the Annual Review also focuses on the progress made in 2006 in the fight against doping in British sport and features UK Sport’s world renowned 100% ME athlete education programme. Other highlights include a look back at the extremely successful World Rowing Championships, supported by UK Sport’s Lottery funded World Class Events Programme, and information on UK Sport’s International Development Programme which is currently actively engaged in promoting sport in 15 countries.
