Job Description
The Students' Rugby Football Union (SRFU) is seeking a qualified accountant to join our Board of Trustees as Treasurer, succeeding the current postholder. This is an unpaid, volunteer role, central to the financial governance and long-term sustainability of the SRFU.
We are looking for someone with a recognised accounting qualification (ACCA, ACA, CIMA or equivalent) and experience in financial oversight, reporting or charity finance, who can provide sound financial stewardship to the Board, ensure robust financial controls, and support the organisation's strategic decision-making.
This is an exciting opportunity to take on a key governance role at a small, ambitious charity, helping to safeguard the financial health of the Students' RFU and facilitate the development of opportunities to grow the game of rugby union in the higher education sector.

Principal responsibilities:
• Financial records & accounting - Maintain proper records of all SRFU financial
transactions in Xero, in line with relevant legislation, and ensure the accounts are kept
up to date monthly.
• Reporting & year-end accounts - Prepare year-end accounts for audit or external
examination, submit audited accounts for Board and AGM approval, and provide
monthly income and expenditure figures against agreed budgets.
• Budgeting - Advise the Chair on effective budgeting and oversee production of budgets
for Board approval ahead of each new financial year.
• Financial governance & compliance - Ensure the SRFU is run on a sound financial
footing, comply with the organisation's financial policies (reserves, expenses, tickets)
and statutory requirements, and ensure salaries, PAYE, NI, SSP and expenses are paid
correctly.
• Banking & authorisation - Act as signatory to SRFU bank accounts in accordance with
the governing documents and authorise expenditure payments.
• Advice to the Board - Advise on all financial matters affecting the Constituent Body, on
Charity and Company Law as relevant, and support the Company Secretary with filings
and returns. Obtain external financial advice where appropriate.
• Board leadership - Make fellow trustees aware of their financial obligations and lead in
interpreting financial data; chair advisory groups, sub-committees or working groups
as requested; and represent the SRFU as directed.
• Engagement & development - Attend SRFU events and activities as directed and
participate in relevant training.

Knowledge, skills and qualities
• A recognised accountancy qualification (ACCA, ACA, CIMA or equivalent), with current
or recent membership of a professional body
• Experience of financial oversight, management accounting, reporting or charity finance
• Sound understanding of financial governance, controls and statutory reporting
requirements
• Knowledge of Charity Law and Company Law as they relate to financial matters
• Able to interpret and clearly communicate financial information to non-financial
colleagues
• Familiarity with cloud accounting software (e.g. Xero)
• Experience of operating as a Trustee / Non-Executive Director
• Able to work effectively with the Trustee Board, Full Committee and wider SRFU
network
• Passion for, or genuine interest in, university rugby
