Para triathlon was introduced to the Paralympic programme at the Rio 2016 Games. Paralympic triathlon events are held over the 'sprint' distance (half the lenght of the Olympic distance for individual competition). Athletes swim 750m, cycle 20km, and run 5km.
Athletes compete in seated, vision impaired, and standing classes. In the wheelchair class, athletes use a handcycle and a racing wheelchair. Vision impaired triathletes are accompanied by guides, and use a tandem in the bike leg. In standing classes, athletes can use prosthetic legs or make modifications to their bike. As in the Olympic version of the sport, time spent in transition between swimming, cycling and running is included in the total event time, and the athlete who completes the course in the least time wins.
