Prepare to “Find Your Greatness” as search for UK's future athletes gets underway The National Lottery operator Allwyn launches ChangeMakers fund for athletes as they make a difference back home Breadth of success targeted as British Olympic and Paralympic performance aspirations confirmed for Paris Investing in sport Strategic plan 2021-31
Learning and development

Future Games Leaders

Dates: Approximately 4 days at either Olympic or Paralympic Games: 7th – 10th August (Olympics) or 1st – 5th September (Paralympics). Plus online and in-person workshops in the build-up (Dates TBC)

Location: Paris for the dates mentioned above, plus online or in-person workshops in the build-up, likely to be held in Loughborough or London.

Team GB and ParalympicsGB aim to unite and inspire the nation through the power of Olympic and Paralympic sport and to enable everyday people to achieve extraordinary things.

With this in mind, UK Sport and the UK Sports Institute (UKSI) are collaborating with Team GB and ParalympicsGB on the development of a leadership programme designed to develop individuals specifically for the context of Games time leadership and leadership roles in the future.

The programme aims to provide a unique, career defining experience that best prepares future Games leaders through a combination of learning sessions and the exposure to the Games environment.

UK Sport and UKSI will deliver the first part of the experience that will start in the UK in the months building up to the Paris 2024 Games. The second part, delivered in collaboration with Team GB’s Ambition Programme and ParalympicsGB Paralympic Inspiration Programme (PIP), will allow for a highly immersive experience in Paris. The final part will culminate with reflection and future action planning back in the UK.

Who should attend?

This opportunity is specifically for applicants with future ambitions to step into a Team GB/ParalympicsGB Games Leadership role in the future. There is a very broad spectrum of leadership roles spanning team leader, lead practitioner roles & lead coach amongst others. Specifically:

  • Applicants must be on a realistic trajectory, and aspire, to be in a Games leadership role in the next 4-6 years (LA 2028/Winters 2030)
  • Applicants must have existing leadership experience that includes leading and managing individuals and teams, setting vision and guiding direction as well as stakeholder management.

Team GB, ParalympicsGB, UK Sport and UKSI are equal opportunities employers and as such all applicants from across the high-performance system are welcomed. This programme is on offer to the whole spectrum of the high-performance system including National Governing Bodies, Home Country Institutes as well as UK Sport and UKSI.

Individuals that have previously been to more than one Olympic or Paralympic Games in any capacity. It is considered that these individuals have already picked up enough conscious and unconscious learning through being exposed to Games environment, and this experience wouldn’t add to that.

This is NOT a programme for those already going to Paris in any formal role with Team GB or ParalympicsGB.

Key topics and benefits

The experience will aim to explore the following leadership areas both in the UK and in Paris:

  • Reflective practice – developing the skill to reflection ‘in’ and ‘on’ action
  • Leading self – understanding and managing self and energy
  • Games time performance planning
  • Leading and managing individuals and teams – teams and teaming, clarity of roles, relationships, stakeholders, collaboration
  • Decision making – under pressure, professional judgment and decision making
  • Experiential scenario-based learning – to practice application

Costs

The total cost per place is c.£3,000 (exact costs to be confirmed in due course but will not exceed this amount) which will cover all accommodation, travel etc.
Any member of NGB staff is expected to contribute £1,000 with UK Sport subsidising the remaining amount. Anyone who is not an NGB staff member will be required to contribute the full amount of £3,000. If you would like to discuss the associated costs and the contribution required, then please do get in touch.
