Research and impacts

A crowd of cheering sports fans waving Union Jack flags

In our role as the centralised body for major events in the UK, we are in a position to be able to carry out industry wide research.

Value of events 2023

In March 2024, we released the Value of Events 2023 report. The report we commissioned sets out how hosting 16 elite sporting events in the UK delivered far reaching benefits. Events that were enabled by the investment of National Lottery grants and the UK Exchequer.

The report serves as powerful evidence demonstrating that hosting major sporting events can make a significant economic, societal, reputational, sporting and environmental contribution to the entire UK.

Turning habits into moments

In partnership with the Women’s Sport Trust, this research investigates how to transfer the interest of women’s sport at the biggest events into everyday habits to follow the sport.

State of play

We are undertaking an in-depth look at the sector to further understand the future opportunities and challenges of the major events sector. Findings and recommendations from this research are due mid-2023.

eventIMPACTS

Events of all sizes and scales have an ability to power positive change for people and the planet in many ways, however it is not always a straight-forward process to capture and evidence all of these impacts.

UK Sport has worked with a number of national and regional partners to develop the eventIMPACTS platform – designed to help event organisers improve their evaluation of the impacts associated with the staging of sporting, cultural and business events.

The eventIMPACTS platform has been developed by UK Sport, Visit Wales, Event Scotland and Tourism Northern Ireland, with support and contributions from industry experts. It comprises some key guidance, good practice principles and tools (e.g. calculators) for evaluating the social, economic, environmental and media-related impacts associated with staging major events.
