International Relations Investment Strategies (IRIS)
UK Sport works with National Governing Bodies (NGBs) and other partners to help them build strong and positive relationships with their international and continental federations and other national and international sporting bodies.
Having a strong voice within these organisations is essential to ensure that NGBs can engage effectively with the international sporting community and key decision-makers, whilst also contributing to the development and governance of their sport at the international level.
To do this, we support and invest in bespoke long-term strategies for those sports that receive UK Sport World Class Programme (WCP) or Progression funding; or have an agreed Major Events hosting target. UK Sport may also provide limited International Relations investment to sports receiving National Squad Support Funding (NSSF).
As part of our 2021-25 International Relations strategy, we are focused on supporting NGBs to:
- Strengthen their voice in European as well as International Federations
- Extend their global network and partnerships in Europe, the Commonwealth and around the world to cement the reputation of NGBs (and that of the UK) as a globally connected, engaged and supportive player
- Identify high-calibre, diverse and gender-equal candidates for international positions – not just on Boards but also sub-committee structures
- Maximise the opportunities to host international meetings and events
- Advance gender equality, diversity and inclusion; and be thought leaders in shaping and supporting reform in the governance, ethics, integrity and sustainability of international sport, while advocating for a thriving sporting system that takes action on environmental sustainability
- Support and develop the voice of athletes on the world stage
International relations investment
Our investment process is supported by a basic framework and the principles of our International Relations investment into NGBs over the 2021-25 funding cycle. Our funding awards per sport can be found below. These awards are indicative of maximum amounts to be awarded and are reviewed on a six-monthly basis.
