Three trailblazing women elected to key roles in international sport governance

Published 9 December 2025

British sport is celebrating a major win for equality and representation as three incredible women have secured influential roles on the world stage.

In a significant moment for gender representation in global sport leadership, Annamarie Phelps (Rowing), Non Stanford (Triathlon) and Pat Aiyenuro (Fencing) have recently been elected to influential positions within international federations. Their success reflects a growing commitment to diversity and inclusion at the highest levels of sport governance and has ensured UK Sport has reached its target of gender equality in international representation.

All three leaders participated in UK Sport’s International Leadership Mentoring Programme in 2023-2024, with Phelps serving as a mentor to aspiring female leaders while Stanford and Aiyenuro were paired with experienced leaders who provided guidance and practical tools to succeed in international governance roles. Phelps and Aiyenuro are also alumni of UK Sport’s International Leadership Programme.

In 2021, UK Sport set a target of achieving gender equality in British representation in positions on the boards of International and European Federations for sports that receive UK Sport investment. In 2021, women made up only 36% of these representatives. Following the elections of Phelps, Stanford and Aiyenuro, female representation has now surpassed the target to reach an all-time high of 54%.

Annamarie Phelps CBE OLY – World Rowing Vice President

Annamarie Phelps, a respected leader in the sporting world, has been elected as Vice President of World Rowing. With her extensive experience in rowing and sports administration, Phelps brings a wealth of knowledge and a strong voice for athlete welfare and governance reform. Phelps is also Vice Chair of the British Olympic Association, a member of the Executive Committee of the European Olympic Committees and Co-Chair of the International Working Group on Women and Sport.

Non Stanford OLY – Chair of World Triathlon Athletes Committee & Executive Board Member

Former elite triathlete and Olympian Non Stanford has been elected Chair of the World Triathlon Athletes Committee. In this role, she will represent athletes’ interests and ensure their perspectives shape decision-making. Additionally, Stanford will hold a seat on the World Triathlon Executive Board, giving her a direct influence on the federation’s strategic direction.

Pat Aiyenuro – Member of the FIE Executive Committee

Pat Aiyenuro has secured a position on the Executive Committee of the Fédération Internationale d'Escrime (FIE), the global governing body for fencing. Aiyenuro’s election highlights her dedication to the sport and her vision for its growth and inclusivity. Aiyenuro is also the President of British Fencing.

These appointments mark a significant step forward for gender balance in sport governance and showcase the exceptional talent and leadership of British women in shaping the future of international sport.
