UK Sport has awarded £300,000 to 18 National Governing Bodies to support them with their organisational health. The awards are the first to be made following the establishment of the National Governing Body Development Fund (NDF) last year.
The NDF was launched in September 2022, with the aim of working collaboratively with NGBs to support their development as well-run, effective and sustainable organisations, in line with UK Sport’s 2021-31 Strategic Plan.
Applications were received against four key areas of organisational health, namely:
- Strategy and Growth
- People and Skills
- Standards and Risk
- Relevance and Impact
Strong themes have emerged from UK Sport’s engagement with NGBs as part of the Development Fund process, particularly in building capability across NGBs to generate income, improving member experience and developing positive cultures within organisations.
The insight gathered from these projects will help shape UK Sport’s approach to growing a thriving sporting system working in partnership with the Home Country Sports Councils.
The Fund is supported by a new Organisational Health Tool, which enables NGBs to review their organisation and supports NGBs’ improvements throughout their work and operations.
A full breakdown of the funding awards made to NGBs through the NDF is available here.
NGB Funding Awards
A second round of NDF funding is expected in 2023/24.
Further support on governance and diversity & inclusion
The NDF awards comes alongside further support being made available to NGBs to strengthen their governance, including new guidance* covering;
This new guidance complements the Home Country Sports Councils' 5-year investment into the Sports Governance Academy announced last November.
UK Sport has also commissioned bespoke support to support our partners prepare or further develop their Diversity and Inclusion Action Plans (DIAPs) to ensure that all of our partners have ambitious plans that commit to progress and drive action on diversity and inclusion in their organisation. This additional support follows UK Sport’s commitment, set out jointly with Sport England in the revised Code for Sports Governance, to ensure that sport is fully inclusive and reflective of society.
*Access to the guidance is available via the links above, via the Sports Governance Academy and for NGBs to download via the UK Sport Governance portal.
