Nicholl welcomes new Government sport strategy as "powerful vision" for future

Published 17 December 2015

UK Sport has welcomed the Government’s strategy on sport which was announced earlier today.

The strategy, which followed a broad consultation, recognises the achievements of UK Sport in performance, governance and major events while encouraging better ways of working in partnership to ensure greater impact from all areas of our work.

Liz Nicholl, UK Sport Chief Executive said: “The Government’s new sports strategy provides a powerful vision and framework and if sport aligns behind it, the collective effort will have a far greater impact on individuals, in communities and in the economy.

“We are delighted that the strategy recognises the excellence of the high performance system and we accept the responsibility to find ways to widen the reach of our ‘what it takes to win’ approach and to share some of the expertise that exists within Olympic and Paralympic sports while not diluting our focus on medal success.

“The proposed new governance code is very timely. We know that there is a strong correlation between good leadership and governance and the success of a business and there has never been a more important time to ensure the integrity of sport. We are committed to building on the progress that has already been made in this area.

“Through our work we have aimed to deliver medal success to inspire a proud, ambitious, healthy and active nation. We look forward to continuing our work in partnership to deliver even greater impact from all areas of our work.”
