Great Britain ended up winning 29 gold medals at London 2012, but the first was won one year ago today by Helen Glover and Heather Stanning at an overcast Eton Dorney.
Competing on day five of the Games, the world silver medallists triumphed in the women’s pair event becoming the first British female rowers to win an Olympic title.
Helen and Heather had only been rowing together for two years but dominated the race from the off. Helen’s triumph was all the more remarkable as she only took up rowing in 2007 after being identified by the UK Sport/EIS talent ID campaign, Sporting Giants.
By the 500m mark, they were a length clear of Australia in second place and New Zealand in third. The antipodean’s could do nothing to catch the relentless pace of the British pair as they stormed to victory to the delight of the packed grandstands.
Did you know? The first talent ID campaign post-London 2012 - Fighting Chance: Battle4Brazil - has already identified 15 potential new taekwondo stars.
