UK Sport seeks next intake for its International Leadership Programme

Published 3 July 2013

UK Sport has launched a recruitment drive for the next chapter of its prestigious and highly valued International Leadership Programme (ILP).

By developing the knowledge, expertise and skills of representatives from UK National Governing Bodies (NGBs) and other national partners, the ILP works to ensure the sporting interests of the UK and its representatives are positioned at the forefront of international elite sport.

UK Sport works with both Olympic and Paralympic NGBs to develop international relations strategies, to help deliver NGB’s objectives, plans and influence the decisions made within the International Federation (IF) to which it affiliates. UK Sport is looking to NGBs to identify suitable candidates for the programme as part of a strategically planned approach to help British NGBs achieve their international relations objectives.

Targeted primarily at international post holders from Olympic and Paralympic sports in the UK, the ILP aims to build upon the strong reputation of previous years with competition for places expected to be high. Limited places on the programme will be made available to individuals from non-Olympic/Paralympic NGBs and national partners who’s role or position demonstrably contributes positively to the UK’s wider relationships in international sport.

Simon Morton, UK Sport’s Director of Major Events & International Relations, said:

“As a leading nation within international sport and as part of the people legacy of London 2012, the UK has both a responsibility and a strategic interest to develop our international sport leaders of tomorrow. This not only ensures the UK is contributing to a healthy international sporting system but also provides a stable platform for our continued success. The ILP has a proven track record in developing effective international sport administrators and should be given serious consideration by anyone who has ambition to contribute to the governance of international sport.”

This ILP year will run from September 2013 through to April 2014, after which participants will join an ever growing and influential alumni. Participants will need to commit to attend four two-day residential training workshops and a final one day ‘graduation’ event over the 8 month period and must demonstrate a strong commitment to personal development. Modules will cover themes including the international sporting landscape, building powerful relationships, negotiating and influencing techniques, cross-cultural working, managing campaigns in sport and communicating effectively with international audiences.

The deadline for nominations for this year’s programme is Friday 19th July.  For more information about this year’s programme or how to apply, please contact UK Sport’s International Relations team via the following email: international.relations@uksport.gov.uk

UK Sport’s wider commitment to leadership development

The International Leadership Programme is part of UK Sport’s wider ambition and commitment is to work collaboratively with our NGBs and partner organisations to ensure world class leaders are driving sustainable success and leading outstanding organisations. UK Sport in partnership with the Home Country Sports Councils have established a UK-wide approach to leadership development, which aims to build the capacity, qualities and behaviours of Boards, Chair and CEOs to create the very best led and governed NGBs and organisations within Sport. A range of individual and team development initiatives are on offer to our NGBs and partners and for further information please contact: leadership.development@uksport.gov.uk

Further information on the programme can be found in the brochure.
