Job Description
Job purpose:
The purpose of the Community Activator Coach Apprenticeship role is to inspire, support and motivate local people to lead healthier, more active lives by using the power of physical activity, organised play and sport. The role exists to engage individuals, families and community groups who are inactive, have low confidence, or face barriers to taking part in physical activity, helping them build positive habits and improve their overall wellbeing.
Working at the heart of the community, the Community Activator Coach Apprenticeship creates welcoming, inclusive and enjoyable activity opportunities tailored to local needs. The role blends practical coaching, behaviour change support and community engagement to help people take their first steps towards a more active lifestyle. Coaches build rapport, form meaningful relationships and act as positive role models for young people, families and residents with low activity levels.
The role includes working hours alongside 6 hours of dedicated weekly study time as part of the Coach Core training and development programme.

Key responsibilities and duties:
• Lead and deliver inclusive, community focused physical activity and sport sessions tailored to local needs.
• Create safe, motivating and supportive environments using effective leadership and coaching principles.
• Build positive relationships with participants, families and young people to encourage ongoing engagement.
• Support individuals with low activity levels by applying behaviour change approaches to build confidence and routine.
• Act as a visible, positive role model within the community, inspiring healthier and more active lifestyles.
• Work collaboratively with partners such as youth workers, health teams, community safety services, volunteers and local sports clubs.
• Contribute to community activation events and assist in their planning and delivery.
• Support programme development by helping organisations evaluate, improve and promote sessions.
• Use customer insight to shape the design and delivery of activities that meet local community needs.
• Safeguard the wellbeing and safety of all participants during sessions and wider community interactions.
• Utilise social media and digital tools to share information, engage target groups, promote activities and capture basic data.
• Prepare resources, equipment and session plans prior to delivery.
• Record attendance, collect feedback and note observations to support continuous improvement.
• Meet with community partners and colleagues to coordinate delivery and share updates.
• Facilitate fun, accessible activities that help families be active together.
• Take part in reflective practice, team meetings and ongoing personal development.
• Attend Coach Core training, including practical workshops, 1 to 1 sessions, discovery weeks and development weeks.
• Balance role responsibilities with 6 hours of dedicated weekly study as part of training requirements.
• Ability to capture quantitative/ qualitative data. Collecting case studies to showcase project outcomes.
• Work with the media team to promote the work of the Trust Health projects, linking in with local and national events.
• Undertake other duties and responsibilities as required by the Trust from time to time.
• Representing the Trust and Wigan Athletic Football Club on local and regional networking groups with a responsibility of advocating the power of football in inspiring better outcomes for communities.
• To be a flexible member of the Wigan Athletic Community Trust team and when requested assist in the delivery of other projects and activities including evenings and weekends.
