About Vinco

Vinco broadcasts track and field. We produce live coverage, distribution and on-demand content for federations, rights-holders, broadcasters and online audiences, from British domestic meetings to the Diamond League and World Athletics events. We are a small team based in Wilmslow, and we deliver most of our productions remotely: our studio, master control and cloud infrastructure do the work, with a lean crew on site.

Why this role

The role

You are the engineer who makes sure the pictures and sound get from the track to the audience, every time. You own the live streaming chain end to end: contribution from venues, the Wilmslow studio and master control, cloud encoding and distribution, and monitoring. You design and run the networks and cloud infrastructure our productions depend on. You will also lead the coordtination with our Broadcast Producer and an Operational Support colleague to ensure that the company's needs are met, setting standards and managing their work, with event-day studio staff working under you on show days.

Most of the job happens in the studio and in the cloud, not at the venue. On-site work is occasional.

You do not need to be a software engineer, but scripting and automation are part of how we work, and a computer science background or the ability to write code is a real advantage. Our internal tools are built on TypeScript and Node, Postgres and AWS, and a growing part of the broadcast workflow is glued together with code we write ourselves.

This is an engineering role first. On event days you run the studio and master control, and you may step in on vision mixing or as a technical operator when the production needs it, but your primary responsibility is the technical integrity of what we deliver.

What you will do

Broadcast engineering

- Design, configure and monitor live contribution and distribution using SRT, RTMP and HLS, including redundancy and failover.
- Run the master control room: signal routing, stream health, and distribution to broadcasters, platforms and clients.
- Operate and maintain Dante audio networks and integrate them with the wider broadcast chain.
- Build, document and maintain the studio kit and the flyaway kit that goes to venues: encoders, switchers, intercom, NDI, graphics and replay systems.
- Lead the technical planning for each event: connectivity, signal flow, kit lists, risks and fallbacks.
- Be the technical escalation point during live broadcasts.

Networks and cloud infrastructure

- Design and manage production networks: VLANs, switching, bonded WAN and cellular contribution from venues, IP routing and QoS for media traffic.
- Run our cloud-based broadcast infrastructure (AWS) and keep it secure, documented and cost-efficient.
- Set up monitoring and alerting so problems surface before the audience notices.

Software and automation

- Write scripts and small tools that automate the repetitive parts of the workflow, for example provisioning SRT endpoints and stream keys for each event.
- Integrate systems through their APIs (vMix, cloud services, our internal tools) rather than by hand.
- Keep configuration and infrastructure in version control.
- Contribute to the internal tools Vinco builds for its own operations.

Leading the team

- Work closely with the Broadcast Producer and the Operational Support colleagues: objectives, one-to-ones, development, scheduling and reviews.
- Lead the event-day studio staff and freelancers on show days, and set the technical standards they work to.
- Plan technical crewing for events with the Managing Director, and make the technical calls when they are unavailable.

Event days

- Run the studio and master control on event days, which usually include weekends.
- Occasionally work on site at events in the UK and abroad.
- Own health and safety for the technical rig, in the studio and on the occasions you are on site: risk assessments, safe rigging and manual handling. In a team this size everyone helps move kit, including you.
- Step in on vision mixing, replay or as a technical operator when the production needs it.
- Work directly with venue technical staff, rights-holders and host broadcasters.

What we are looking for

Essential

- Solid hands-on experience engineering live streams: SRT, RTMP, HLS, encoders, redundancy.
- Practical Dante audio experience.
- Strong IP networking: VLANs, switching, bonded WANs, routing, firewalls.
- Experience running live broadcast operations in an MCR or equivalent.
- Strong attention to detail
- Good communication skills
- The ability to multitask
- Experience leading or supervising people in a technical team, or a clear track record that shows you are ready to.
- Calm under pressure, organised, and able to explain a technical problem to someone who is not technical.
- Flexible on hours. Evening and weekend work is a regular part of the job, not an exception.
- A full UK driving licence.
- The right to work in the UK. We are not able to sponsor a visa for this role.

A real advantage

- A degree in computer science or a related discipline, or equivalent experience, and comfort writing code (Python, Bash, TypeScript or similar) and working with APIs, Git, Docker and Linux.
- AWS or other cloud experience, ideally with media services.
- vMix, NDI, Unity Intercom, Blackmagic and similar production tooling.
- Live sport broadcast experience. Athletics is a bonus, not a requirement.

Working at Vinco

- 40 hours a week, typically 9am to 5:30pm (including a thirty minute break), Monday to Friday, in the Wilmslow studio. Flexibility for evening and weekend working is a must: live events do not keep office hours.
- Event hours are compensated with time off in lieu rather than overtime pay: weekend and bank holiday event days earn a day off in lieu, and overnight event work earns additional time off.

- Studio based, with some working from home outside event periods by agreement.
