Job Description
UK Sport is launching this exciting new event to drive performance benefits and visibility for Paralympic sport, by bringing together a week-long festival of elite sporting competition and cultural experiences all in one location on Liverpool’s historic waterfront.
The event is to be held in Liverpool’s M&S Bank Arena, Exhibition Centre Liverpool, historic Docks, and Pier Head May 2027, featuring an outstanding showcase of Paralympic sport 15 months ahead of the LA 2028 Paralympics. It will feature four sports competitions, an £1m accompanying arts and culture programme and a performance-supporting ‘Athletes’ and Artists’ Village’. The arts programme will be funded by Arts Council England and delivered by Culture Liverpool.
The event will be planned and delivered by UKEL; a new independent event hosting company, is offering a full end-to-end solution for UK Sport by managing the funding, contracts, stakeholders, procurement and event director/programme management services for the event.
The Role
We are looking for four independent board members, one as Chair, who understand the role that sport, the arts and major events can play in society.
Candidates could come from a wide variety of backgrounds with relevant skills to enhance the board’s ability to support the delivery of a successful event. We specifically welcome applications from people with a lived disability and from people with experience of delivering accessible and inclusive sport, the arts or major events.
We are specifically looking for individuals with expertise in the following areas:
• Elite Paralympic athlete
• Artist living with a disability
• Marketing and Audience Development
• Commercial and Sponsorship
• Social Impact
The stakeholders are keen the board becomes more diverse. Thus, we are particularly focused on achieving better Female, Black, Asian, minority ethnic representation and people living with a disability.
Previous Board experience is not essential, training and mentoring can be provided.
Main responsibilities
• To ensure that the Stakeholder Board is effective in discussing and setting the company’s strategic direction in planning and delivering the event.
• To act as a member of the Group, offering guidance, support, expertise and an objective perspective on the key matters of strategy, governance, commercial and financial affairs, and risk management.
• To sit on specialist sub-groups as appropriate and agreed, particularly in respect of the specific skills and experience that each member brings.
• To play a key part in the decision-making process on strategic and governance issues
• To ensure that the planning and delivery is run in a transparent and equitable manner
• To act in accordance with the Stakeholder Board Terms of Reference
• To help identify and manage any conflicts of interest that might arise.
• To offer advice and guidance in a consultative capacity to the executive as required, helping to ensure that the organisation has a robust, workable and viable operational strategy, and monitoring the performance of the organisation (and the executive management) against that strategy.
• To maintain positive relationships with major external stakeholders
