Job Description
Welcome from the Chair:

The Sport and Recreation Alliance is the voice of the grassroots sport and recreation sector. Since 1935, the Alliance (formerly known as the Central Council of Physical Recreation) has protected and promoted the interests of our vital sector and membership to government, policy makers and the media. We strongly believe in the transformational power of sport and recreation to positively shape lives and help drive societal and economic growth.

Throughout our new strategy cycle, our unwavering focus will be to deliver with and for our members, particularly our National Governing Body members, who play a foundational role in engaging and keeping people in sport and recreation. As a result of our membership review, we have made several changes to the way in which we are structured and how we operate.

We have evolved our membership structures and services to better support our members and strengthen our role as the independent voice for sport and recreation, bringing together sport and National Governing Bodies to reflect and elevate their systemic role in delivering sport.

We are being smarter in the way we work together with our members,
collaborating more effectively to identify key priorities and focusing our
resources on delivering against these. We are enhancing our
communications and engagement with members to increase awareness of and support for the work we and our members are doing. Using our independent voice, we will protect members’ interests with key decision makers and be bold and ambitious in promoting the benefits of sport and recreation and the impact our members have.

We are seeking Committee members to assist with the work of the NGB Coalition Division. This is a new opportunity that has been driven by the recent development of our 2025-30 strategy, A United Voice for Sport and Recreation, and implementation of revised membership structures to provide greater focus towards supporting NGBs.

NGB Coalition - Management Committee:

The members of the NGB Coalition will delegate the leadership and management of the NGB Coalition to the Management Group and the Alliance staff team.

The Board of the Alliance is looking for 2x independent members to
join the Management Committee. These individuals should be
independent of any NGB (no current political or commercial
involvement within an NGB).

In addition to the two independents, the Board is looking for 1x NGB
Chair, to also join the Management Committee. Diversity is valued within our team. More than just encouraging your application, we’re committed to conscious inclusion that (we hope) cultivates an ethos of belonging, connection and shared purpose. It’s this philosophy that drove us to shape our values and behaviours and we open our doors to those who share those values.

Every role in the Alliance team is open to applications from all
sections of society. We believe in the potential of everyone; regardless
of race, religion or belief, ethnic origin, different physical ability, family
structure, socioeconomics, age, nationality, marital, domestic or civil
partnership status, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other
difference that makes you, well, you.

Prior to completing and submitting a CV, please refer to our privacy
policy on our website.

Time and Commitment:
You will be expected to attend at least four meetings a year which are
usually around 1.5 hours long and are normally held virtually or at
the Alliance’s offices in Holborn, Central London. In addition, we would
encourage your attendance at the NGB Coalition Divisional meetings
and other Alliance events together with the Annual General Meeting,
currently held in October/November.

The role is voluntary [unpaid] although we will pay Committee
Members’ travel expenses and provide an induction to the
organisation’s work if this is required.

Term of Office:
The appointment will be for four years, with an option for
re-appointment for one more term.
Governance

We are committed to high standards of governance and we are
compliant at Tier 3 with ‘A Code for Sports Governance’.

Our governance structure and policies allow us to maintain a strong
board which works hard to build a sustainable organisation. Further
details of our Board and framework can be found here: https://sportandrecreation.org.uk/about/corporate-governance
How to apply
Please find below details of the selection process, to assist you in completing and tailoring your application: You should submit: • An up-to-date CV – we recommend that this is no longer than two pages. • An appropriate covering letter– we recommend that this is no longer than one page. Please send your completed CV and covering letter to the Company Secretary, Sport and Recreation Alliance, by email to Kate Lawrenson (klawrenson@sportandrecreation.org.uk) Closing date – applications should be received by noon on Thursday 29 January 2025 You will receive an acknowledgement to your email and we suggest that if you do not receive this you should contact Kate on 020 7976 3900 to confirm your application has been received. All candidates’ CVs and covering letters will be considered by the Chair and Deputy Chair of the NGB Coalition Division. Any interviews will be notified after the closing date and may be by video conference.
