Job Description
GB Taekwondo is a High-Performance Company, established in 2002 to develop a Taekwondo ‘World Class Programme (WCP)’, designed to realise the potential of the nation’s most promising Taekwondo athletes in major international competition including at the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
We are seeking a Team Physiotherapist to join the GB Taekwondo Medical Team and help realise the performance potential of GB’s most talented Taekwondo athletes. Working as part of the medical team and guided by the Lead Physiotherapist, this role will be pivotal in developing and supporting athletes to step onto a major championship podium for the first time. In addition, the role will involve contributing to the long-term development of athletes progressing from development squads to senior teams, ensuring continuity of care and performance support throughout their athletic journey.The successful candidate must ensure they can provide the best information possible, which will allow the athlete and coaching team to make an informed decision based on the best medical advice possible.As a member of the Medical Team, the post holder will:
Work in collaboration with the Lead Physio on the delivery of physiotherapy and soft tissue therapy service from the GB National Taekwondo Centre, competition venues and at camps around the world.
Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team (MDT) delivering services to athletes and coaches with an overall aim of always delivering World Class provision
Within the rules of professional confidentiality provide open and clear communication with athletes, parents, coaches and other support staff as appropriate.
Work within the rules of the UK Professional Code of Conduct, standards and guidelines of GB Taekwondo.
Where appropriate, inform and educate athletes and coaches in rehabilitation programmes, either preventative, performance enhancement or directly related to recovery from injury
Maintain a comprehensive, indexed database of work conducted with athletes and coaches including the use of the electronic medical records system.
Attend, contribute to and provide regular reports at appropriate meetings associated with the programme particularly the MDT meetings and athlete injury review meetings.
Monitor injuries throughout the pathway and identify proactive interventions to maximise the number of available training days.
Contribute to the long-term development of athletes progressing through the pathway ensuring a seamless transition and continuity of care.
Utilisation of data and insight to inform, develop, and deliver effective approaches to mitigate injury/illness risk and optimise performance.
International Competition Duties:
Provide medical services to athletes while away at International Competitions when required to travel.
In collaboration with the wider medical team, implement positive rapid responses to any injuries obtained while competing, keeping the athlete in competition in discussion with the Head of Teams and Operations, Head of Athlete Performance and coaching team where it’s safe to do so.
Qualifications
A qualification at degree level in Physiotherapy
Membership of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (MCSP) and registered with the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC).
Experience
Experience in the provision of physiotherapy services within the sporting setting to athletes and coaches, and any experience within contact sport would be seen as desirable.
A verifiable record of working within a multi-disciplinary team in the delivery of physiotherapy services.
Knowledge
An understanding of the needs of the performance demands and needs of elite athletes and coaches in a high-performance environment.
Knowledge of contemporary advances in applied musculoskeletal medicine (encompassing assessment, clinical reasoning, rehabilitation, return to performance, and injury/illness risk management).
A comprehensive understanding of sports science and sports medicine disciplines and their roles in performance.
Specialised musculoskeletal knowledge and clinical reasoning skills with experience of application in sport.
Understanding of technical skills and knowledge underpinning the delivery of athlete management and rehabilitation in the performance environment (including physical training and adaptation, testing and monitoring, periodisation/planning and coaching).
