Job Description
The English Karate Federation CIC (EKF) is an independent, not-for-profit governing organisation established to support the development of safe, inclusive and high-quality karate participation across England. The organisation works with affiliated Associations, Clubs, coaches and volunteers to strengthen participation opportunities, organisational standards, governance and long-term sustainability across the English karate community.

The EKF is currently undertaking a significant period of organisational development and modernisation focused upon strengthening governance arrangements, participation infrastructure, organisational capability and member support across the sport.

As part of the next phase of development, the EKF is seeking to appoint two strategically minded and values-driven Non-Executive Directors to join the Board.

The Opportunity

These appointments represent an opportunity to contribute to the continued development of a growing national sporting organisation operating within an evolving governance and participation landscape.

The successful candidates will support the Board in providing effective strategic oversight, constructive challenge and independent perspective as the organisation continues to strengthen its structures, culture and long-term resilience.

The Board is particularly interested in hearing from applicants with experience in areas such as:

- governance and compliance
- finance or audit
- legal or regulatory environments
- organisational transformation
- digital infrastructure and systems
- communications and stakeholder engagement
- commercial development and partnerships
- equality, diversity and inclusion
- sport governance
- public or voluntary sector leadership
- strategic planning and organisational development.

Applications are welcomed both from individuals within sport and from candidates bringing wider external expertise from sectors such as business, health, education, regulation, charity leadership or public service.

Previous Board experience is welcomed but not essential.

Role Purpose

Non-Executive Directors will work collectively with the Chair and wider Board to:

- support the strategic direction of the organisation
- contribute to effective governance and decision-making
- provide constructive support and challenge
- promote high standards of integrity and accountability
- support organisational development and sustainability
- and help ensure the Federation operates effectively in the interests of its members and the wider karate community.

Key Responsibilities

The Non-Executive Directors will be expected to:

- contribute to strategic planning and organisational development
- review Board papers, policies and organisational reports
- support effective governance, accountability and oversight arrangements
- provide independent perspective and constructive challenge
- contribute to risk management and assurance discussions
- support the development of organisational culture and standards
- contribute positively to Board discussion and decision-making
- act in the best interests of the organisation at all times.

Person Specification

Applicants should be able to demonstrate:

- sound judgement and strategic thinking
- ability to analyse information and contribute constructively to discussion
- strong communication and interpersonal skills
- willingness to provide support and challenge appropriately
- understanding of leadership, governance or organisational oversight principles
- ability to operate with professionalism, integrity and discretion.

The Board would particularly welcome candidates with experience relating to:

- governance and assurance
- organisational transformation and change
- finance, audit or risk management
- digital systems and infrastructure
- stakeholder engagement and communications
- commercial partnerships and sustainability
- equality, diversity and inclusion
- sport governance or participation development.

A background in karate is welcomed but not essential.

Time Commitment

The anticipated commitment is approximately:

6–10 Board or committee meetings annually
periodic document review and preparation
occasional additional development sessions or working groups.

Most meetings are currently held remotely.

These are voluntary positions; however, reasonable expenses will be reimbursed in accordance with EKF policy.
