Job Description
SRFU Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Officer (Volunteer)
About the SRFU
The Students’ Rugby Football Union (SRFU) is the representative body for university rug-by union in England, working to grow and develop the game so it’s open, welcoming and safe for everyone. We partner closely with the RFU Player Pipeline Team, RFU EDI Team and British University and Colleges Sport (BUCS) to align activity across higher educa-tion rugby.

We are a charitable company registered at Companies House (Company No. 04240029) and with the Charity Commission (Charity No. 1087986). The SRFU is governed by a Board of Trustees who have overall responsibility for the charity’s strategy, governance, budget and compliance. Our charitable purpose is “the advancement of amateur sport.” Our charitable objects include “administering, fostering, encouraging, extending and controlling rugby union football for the moral, mental and physical development of students” in England.

The SRFU is led by committed volunteers, supported by one employee. Everything we do is underpinned by good governance, safeguarding, data protection and clear com-munications processes.
Why this role matters
Rugby is built on inclusion—but we know there’s more to do to ensure everyone feels they belong on and off the pitch. We’re looking for a volunteer Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) Officer to help us turn our strategy into practical action—with organisational ownership and oversight. You’ll bring people together, support positive behaviours, share best practice, and help us make measurable progress.
The role
You will implement the SRFU’s agreed EDI Strategy and Action Plan—working alongside Trustees, committee members, volunteers and partners. You’ll lead and coordinate an EDI Working Group, unearth good practice, shape campaigns with our communications team, and represent SRFU in relevant forums. Decisions and approvals rest with the Full Committee/Trustee Board; your role is to deliver and enable.

Key Responsibilities
• Deliver the SRFU EDI Strategy and annual Action Plan, ensuring activities support the five strategic objectives.
• Coordinate and lead the EDI Advisory Group: prepare agendas, guide discussions, and turn feedback into practical actions for committee approval.
• Manage and prioritise EDI projects, campaigns and initiatives using the Strategy as the guiding framework.
• Monitor progress and share updates: maintain light-touch data and insight reporting, producing short progress summaries for the Full Committee.
• Work with the communications team to share good practice and support campaigns such as the monthly Spotlight feature.
• Represent SRFU in EDI forums and partnerships and work with the RFU EDI team and BUCS. Ensure all activity complies with SRFU governance, safeguarding and data protection processes.
Person Specification
Essential
• Passionate about tackling inequalities and creating an inclusive environment in sport.
• Good communication skills and confidence engaging with students, volunteers and partners.
• Organised and able to manage tasks effectively.
• Collaborative and adaptable approach; able to turn feedback into practical actions.
• Willingness to learn about EDI, safeguarding and SRFU processes.

Desirable
• Interest or experience in EDI or inclusion projects (sport or student settings are a bonus).
• Experience working with volunteer groups or student communities.
• Creative, solution-focused mindset and ability to use data or feedback to inform decisions.
• Knowledge of rugby or higher education sport environments.
• Awareness of safeguarding and governance in sport or charity settings.

Approximately 8-10 hours per month, including Advisory Group meetings, 3 Full Committee meetings annually (online 2 hours) project coordination and occasional stakeholder events such as the RFU inclusion meetings.

This is a two-year volunteer role, with an annual check-in to make sure everything’s working well for you and the team. After that, there’s the option to continue for another two years.
Reasonable expenses will be reimbursed.
