Job Description
England Athletics is the National Governing Body for the sport in England and is a membership organisation made up of c1,870clubs and bodies. Our purpose is to inspire more athletes and runners of all abilities and backgrounds to fulfil their potential and have a lifelong love for the sport. We work in partnership with the wider athletics family, especially UK Athletics, Home Countries and Sport England and provide national level competition. England Athletics also plays a pivotal role in the organisation and delivery of the Commonwealth Games working in partnership with Commonwealth Games England.

As a membership organisation we currently have c1,870 member clubs/bodies and c180,843 registered athletes. We exist to govern the sport in accordance with our articles to promote and deliver athletics and running activities across all ages, event disciplines, and ability levels. There are also around 6.5m who run each month in England, 4,433 licensed races and 207,631 active RunTogether participants operating in more than 3,686 registered running groups.

Our vision is for athletics to continue to be an inclusive and accessible sport where everyone belongs and can flourish, led by a network of progressive clubs and organisations, and supported by a sustainable, respected, and trusted membership and development body. In achieving this we will expand the capacity of the sport, sustain and increase participation and performance levels, as well as influence participation in the wider athletics market.

England Athletics is seeking to strengthen its Board with two exceptional individuals who wish to serve as a Non-Executive Director and support the direction for the next phase of the strategy. The successful candidates will join the England Athletics Board at an exciting and challenging time for the sport and in the wider sports sector. They will have a passion for success and demonstrate a strong commitment to the delivery of excellence and quality. The successful candidates will also align with our values of integrity, inclusivity, inspiration and fun.

As a diverse sport, it is important that England Athletics has a diverse Board and that each Non-Executive Director brings a range of skills, knowledge and experience from different backgrounds. The successful candidates will be able to make a significant contribution to the Board of England Athletics and support the organisation to achieve its strategic goals.

England Athletics is looking for two Non-Executive Directors with previous Board experience, who demonstrate integrity, sound judgement, emotional intelligence, personal presence, communication and listening skills, and flexibility. Recent involvement, or an interest, in athletics is not essential but a willingness to devote the necessary time is important.

Non-Executive Director #1:
– ACA, CIMA, or ACCA qualifications.
– Strong financial background as a Financial Director or Senior Finance Manager.
– Experience in providing strategic, governance and risk management oversight.
– The successful candidate will be required to chair the Audit & Assurance Committee.

Non-Executive Director #2:
– Strong commercial background at a senior level.
– Expertise in commercial strategy and business development to help drive sustainable growth, sponsorship and provide independent scrutiny.
– The successful candidate will be required to develop and chair a newly formed commercial advisory group.

The Board meets around 6-8 times a year and Board Members will additionally be appointed to one or more Board Committees or a Task & Finish Group.

• Second interviews will be held on Monday 29th June 2026 (in person/London).
