Independent Non Executive Director - Governance Organisation British Handball Association Salary 0 Location Remote Contract type Volunteer (Part time) Closing date 9 March 2026 Interview date 16 March 2026 Job Description Organisation - British Handball Association (BHA)Role type - Non-Executive DirectorSalary - Voluntary (unpaid)Location - Remote (Occasional in-person meetings may be required)Contract type - Board appointment (term length to be confirmed)Role OverviewThe British Handball Association (BHA) is seeking a Governance Expert to join the BHA Board of Directors.The successful candidate will oversee and lead on governance matters for the BHA, ensuring the organisation operates in line with best practice, regulatory requirements, and the principles of good governance.In addition to their responsibilities within BHA, the postholder will provide governance support and guidance to England Handball Association and Scottish Handball, helping to promote consistency, transparency, and effective governance across the Home Nations.Key Responsibilities• Oversee and support the governance framework of the BHA.• Ensure BHA’s policies, procedures, and decision-making processes align with recognised standards of good governance.• Support compliance with the Code for Sports Governance and other relevant governance requirements.• Provide advice and guidance to the Board on governance-related matters.• Contribute to Board discussions, strategic planning and organisational development.• Act in the best interests of British Handball, upholding integrity, accountability and transparency at all times.• You will also collaborate with the governance leads at England Handball Association and Scottish Handball Association to ensure strong governance across handball in the UKPerson SpecificationDesirable:Governance Experience and Skills• Experience in sports or non-profit organisational governance.• An understanding of Board-level responsibilities, fiduciary duties and strategic decision-making.• Strong communication, advisory and influencing skills.• The ability to work collaboratively with multiple organisations and stakeholders.Policy, Regulation and Sector Insight• Awareness of how UK Sport, Sport England, Sport Scotland, and other key agencies influence governance expectations and organisational behaviour.• An understanding of regulatory, funding, and compliance pressures affecting sports bodies in Great Britain, and the ability to support Boards in navigating these effectively.Personal Attributes• High levels of integrity, independence, and sound judgement.• A commitment to transparency, accountability, and continuous improvement.• A genuine interest in the effective governance of handball across Great Britain.Desirable:Understanding of the Sporting Governance Landscape• A strong understanding of the UK sporting governance environment, including the roles of National Governing Bodies.• Knowledge of the Code for Sports Governance and how it applies in practice within funded and non-funded sports organisations.
