“The funding made available to British Shooting by the National Lottery, Exchequer and Team 2012 has enabled us to undertake new innovative training methods that we hope could give our athletes the edge over their competitors as we continue to prepare for London 2012.”
Performance Director, Tim Newenham
British Shooting has received nearly £2.5million of UK Sport investment for the London cycle (2009-13), and runs a tight programme across the three Olympic disciplines of Rifle, Pistol and Shotgun.
There are currently 10* athletes on the UK Sport supported World Class Performance Programme, including Team GB selected athletes Richard Faulds and Richard Brickell, who have been on the Programme for over ten years.
UK Sport National Lottery funding of up to £480k has helped prepare both Olympic and Paralympic shooters for London 2012, with the delivery of three events in the past two years. In 2010, UK Sport invested in support for British Shooting to secure an ISSF World Cup event at Dorchester to help athletes prepare ahead of the Games and benefit from home competition.
Governance restructuring in late 2011 and early 2012 has been driven by a new independent chair [John Harris]. Meanwhile work with UK Sport through the Talent Health Check has identified the need to continue to develop talent identification, confirmation and development.
UK Sport has also worked with British Shooting to develop strategies to improve its influence and engagement with international governing bodies.
At the end of May, the ten-strong shooting team was selected for London 2012 and includes current world record holder Peter Wilson, former Olympic champion Richard Faulds, Commonwealth champion Jonathan Hammond and two Olympic debutants in Jennifer McIntosh and James Huckle.
