National governing body British Rowing

“We are an ambitious squad going into the Games and certainly the best supported we have ever been thanks to our funding from the National Lottery. The establishment of a national training centre at Caversham in 2006 and the benefit of consistent and significant investment by the National Lottery in our team over the past four years has given us a tremendous strength across the disciplines.”
Rowing Performance Director David Tanner

Rowing received the highest level of investment from UK Sport of any Olympic Sport reflecting the number of medals available, the strength of their programme and their track record of success on the biggest stage of all - winning 12 medals at the last 3 Olympics.

Three-time Olympic silver medallist Katherine Grainger is a great ambassador for the positive impact National Lottery funding has made to athletes’ lives and she has been in receipt of an Athlete Personal Award since they were introduced in 1997.

Grainger is the most successful British female rower of all time winning silver medals at the 2000, 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games. She has also been a World Champion on six different occasions.

UK Sport Talent identification initiative Sporting Giants discovered two of the rising stars of the team Helen Glover and Vicky Thornley, who were fast tracked into rowing’s highly successful START scheme which is lottery funded and sponsored by rowing’s high-performance partner, Siemens.

Sporting Giants was launched in 2007 by Sir Steve Redgrave with the aim of discovering tall and powerful athletes to compete in sports including rowing, canoeing, handball and volleyball.
Vicky Thornley was a three-day-eventer and Helen Glover a keen hockey player and cross-country runner before their considerable potential was identified.

Since then both have achieved considerable success with Helen Glover winning three gold medals alongside teammate Heather Stanning at the 2012 World Cup Series in the women’s pair.

Rowing coaches Mark Earnshaw and Paul Stannard have been helped in their development by UK Sport’s Elite Coaching Apprenticeship Programme (ECAP) which ensures they are among the best trained and most knowledgeable in the world.

The World Junior Rowing Championship in Eton Dorney in 2011 gave British rowers a taste of competing on home soil and was one of 118 major sporting events supported by UK Sport’s National Lottery funded Major Events Programme.

Helen Glover was part of the England Satellite Squad for Hockey before transferring to Rowing where her aptitude for the sport were discovered through UK Sport talent ID scheme Sporting Giants
