“London being awarded the 2012 Paralympic Games has played a major part in sitting volleyball’s evolution and development. A big thank you to UK Sport and the Lottery, without their help it would have been impossible for both teams to have climbed international rankings as quickly as they have done.”
Dan Griffin, Performance Manager for Sitting Volleyball
London 2012 will be the first time GB is represented in sitting volleyball at a Paralympic Games, where both a men’s and women’s squad will compete. The men’s participation was confirmed by the British Paralympic Association in September 2011, while the women’s squad had their host nation slot in March 2012.
For the London cycle (2009-13) sitting volleyball has received £786,961 of investment from UK Sport, which represents an increase of over £500,000 compared to the Beijing cycle, when only the men’s squad was supported.
There are 29* athletes across the men’s and women’s squads who are supported by UK Sport’s World Class Performance Programme. The Programme works by ensuring that athletes get the support – delivered through their sport’s national governing body – that they need at every stage of their development.
UK Sport’s Major Events team supported the 2011 ECVD Sitting Volleyball Continental Cup at The National Volleyball Centre, Kettering, with up to £110,000 of National Lottery investment. This was the first Paralympic volleyball event ever to be staged in the UK and provided a unique preparation opportunity for the Paralympic team looking to ensure selection at a home Games.
Did You Know? Sitting volleyball requires players to maintain contact between their pelvis and the floor at all times.
