UK Sport has submitted a range of options for London 2012 funding
In February 2006, UK Sport published its submission to the Government on options for increased funding for elite athletes in the run up to London 2012. The submission is based on UK Sport's ‘no compromise’ approach to delivering performance success.
The investment model allows for a range of options to be considered – including one that is described as the 'ultimate goal’. UK Sport recognises however that such an outcome can only be achieved with the necessary level of funding in place, and that is ultimately a decision for Government.
In the Budget on 22 March 2006, Chancellor Gordon Brown announced additional 2012 performance funding of £200 million, an average of £33.5 million per year. This enables UK Sport to start to work towards the 'ultimate goal' - fourth place in the 2012 Olympic medal table, and first in the Paralympic medal table. In our response to the budget announcement, UK Sport's Chair, Sue Campbell, stated:
"This announcement is excellent news for Olympic and Paralympic sport and is a major step forward. It puts us well on the road to achieving our ultimate goals for 2012 and to leave a lasting legacy for performance sport in this country."
From the date of the Budget announcement, UK Sport has embarked on a '100 Day Plan' setting out its commitment to sport for the delivery of this additional funding.
