Mission 2012 off and running

Mission 2012 has moved off the drawing board and into reality, following some fine-tuning as a result of a series of meetings with sports governing bodies and key partner organisations.
The consultation sessions produced a great deal of useful feedback – both around the existing proposals, and for developing the Mission 2012 project going forwards.
As a result, some ‘tweaks’ were made to the overall plans to build greater opportunities for governing body involvement – especially where issues of contention could exist – and to allow for a trial run of the public reporting elements in the first quarter to familiarise all parties with the process.
In addition, UK Sport recognised that it would not be appropriate to require sports to report during the summer quarter in 2008, at a time when everyone within the high-performance system would be focused on the Beijing Games. Therefore sports will only be required to produce three reports in 2008. Special consideration will also be given to some of the smaller Paralympic sports to ensure that they had the capacity to fulfil the reporting requirements within the set timescales.
Looking to the future, sports indicated that amongst the things they would like to see were: an annual Mission 2012 conference to share best practice from the high-performance world; opportunities to attend other sport’s review sessions and learn from other approaches and perspectives; and the ability to work together in ‘cluster’ groups of ‘like’ sports, to examine the potential for mutual responses to similar challenges.
With sports now completing their first self-assessment reviews for the 9 November deadline, the next chance to take a step back and appraise how well Mission 2012 is bedding down will come in late November once all sports have submitted their reviews and the Mission 2012 Panels have met for the first time.
Initial feedback from sports that have undergone the facilitated self assessment has been very positive and we look forward to receiving the first set of reports next month.
