UK Sport's successful Women and Leadership Development Programme (WLDP) has been taken to an international level, with the launch of a new programme to increase the number of European women leaders in sport.
The Women and International Leadership Programme (WILD) has been modelled on WLDP, a programme devised by UK Sport in partnership with the British Olympic Foundation and CCPR to help tackle the issue of women's representation within the highest ranks of British sport. Established to address the low level of women in senior administrative positions in sport, it involved periods of intense of training and continuous support to build leadership kills and enable the participants to maximize their potential.
Amanda Bennett, UK Sport's Head of Policy, Chair of European Women and Sport and initiator of WLDP, was invited to speak at the WILD launch at the European Parliament in Brussels last week, sponsored by Emma McClarkin MEP and attended by sports leaders from across Europe. Commenting on the new programme, Bennett said:
"This is an historic moment for women in European sport. National and European federations as well as the European Commission are taking joint action to improve sport leadership and governance in Europe by ensuring women can make a full contribution. We in the UK are very proud of the success of WLDP and we are delighted to see this leadership model fully funded by the EU and adopted for the wider benefit of European sport."
WILD is a one year programme offering training on self-awareness, personal skills, leadership and management skills and each participant will be assigned a personal mentor. Six women leaders from each European country have been selected to take part in Year 1 of the programme. The UK representatives are:
Louise Roberts - British Gymnastics
Maria Clayton - British Show Jumping
Diane Modahl - Street Games
Priya Samuel - British University and College Sport
Lara Lill - Amateur Swimming Association
Jenny Fromer - Baseball Softball UK
CCPR is the co-ordinating body for WILD and the British group will join with leaders from France, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Hungary, Italy and the Czech Republic for training events and international networking.
