With the start of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Paralympic Games on Friday, UK Sport would like to wish all twelve British athletes and their support teams the best of luck for their competitions.
As the nation’s high performance sports agency, UK Sport have set the British team a medal target of one at the Games, equalling the total brought home four years ago when the British Wheelchair Curling team won Silver at the Turin Games.
UK Sport’s total investment in winter Paralympic sports and athletes since Turin 2006 was £650,000 and focused on two sports, Wheelchair Curling and Alpine Skiing. The Wheelchair Curling team, led by skip Micheal McCreadie will once again hope to reach the podium whilst alpine skier Sean Rose goes into the Games in fantastic form as a 2010 World Cup gold medallist and will hope to improve on his 6th place finish four years ago.
John Steele, UK Sport’s Chief Executive, said: “The Olympic Games in Vancouver were exciting and dramatic and I am sure the Paralympic Games will be full of some more fantastic moments. I know that every event will be hugely competitive but I am confident that our sports and athletes have the ability to succeed”.
The 10th Winter Paralympic Games will begin on Friday with more than 600 athletes from 45 different countries expected to take part. The closing ceremony will then take place just over a week later on Sunday 21st March.
