Hugh Robertson and Sebastian Coe have paid tribute to UK Sport Chief Executive John Steele following today’s announcement that he will be leaving the organisation to become the new Chief Executive of the Rugby Football Union.
Hugh Robertson, Minister for Sport and Olympics said: “John Steele has done a first class job as the CEO of UK Sport – an organisation primarily responsible for the preparation of our athletes for London 2012. His proudest achievement will almost certainly be our excellent result in the medal table in Beijing.
“It is, therefore, no surprise that he has been snapped up by the RFU as they look towards the World Cup in 2015. As a former rugby player with Northampton Saints, and a proven track record as Chief Executive at UK Sport, I have no doubt that he will make an extremely impressive impact.”
Sebastian Coe, Chairman, London 2012 Organising Committee, said: “John is an exceptional sports leader and our teams have enjoyed working closely with him during his time at UK Sport. During his stewardship he brought focus, commitment and passion to the cause of elite level performance. I know our world class competitors and their National Governing Bodies will miss their day-to-day involvement with him. With those experiences and relationships under his belt he will prove an invaluable asset as he returns to his roots in rugby.”
Steele will leave UK Sport in late July.
