Following UK Sport’s announcement last week of an ambitious pre-Games events programme in the coming 1000 days to the start of London 2012, the first of these events involving Britain’s Paralympians, backed by the National Lottery funded World Class Events Programme, will start tomorrow.
The UCI Para-Cycling World Championships will kick off at the Manchester Velodrome tomorrow (Friday 6 November), bringing the world’s best Para-Cyclists to the city for three days of track action.
The event is a perfect opportunity for fans to watch the GB Para-Cycling Team compete on home soil. The event comes just one year after the team won 20 medals, 17 of which were gold, at the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games making them the most successful Para-Cycling team of all time.
The targeted 64-event programme in the 1000 days to London will aim to include 16 events in Paralympic disciplines, including the Wheelchair Basketball World Championships in Birmingham and World Goalball Championships in Sheffield next year plus the Disability Sailing World Championships in Weymouth in 2011, all of which are already confirmed.
UK Sport’s Head of Events Simon Morton, said: “The Para-Cycling World Championships is a great way to begin what we hope will be a comprehensive programme of events to help prepare our Paralympians and Paralympic hopefuls for competing in front of their home crowds in London, as well as the many volunteers and officials that will be required. Events will take place all over the UK, from Glasgow down to Weymouth, so it’s a great opportunity for the British public to come and watch world class athletes in action on their own doorstep.”
The championships will kick off on Friday 6 November at 12:30 with fans guaranteed to see the best of the Male Pursuit and the 1000m Time Trial with over ten hours of exciting track action.
Among the big stars from the GB Para-Cycling Team competing this weekend will be current World and Paralympic Champion Sarah Storey, entered in the LC1[1] category, and Darren Kenny, current World and Paralympic Champion in the CP3[2] Kilo and 3km Pursuit.
Saturday 7 November will see the women kick off their World Championship at 11:30am, with headline events including the Time Trial and the 3km Pursuit. The day will come to a close after the final of the Men’s 4km Pursuit at 10:40pm.
On Sunday 8 November competition will kick off at 10:30am when the teams take to the track in the Women’s 500m Time Trial and the Men’s Tandem Sprint Final. Concluding a thrilling final day will be the Mixed Team Sprint at 4:20pm in which GB are the current World and Paralympic Champions.
British Cycling is able to stage the UCI Para-Cycling Track World Championships thanks to the support of its partners including Manchester City Council, Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA), UK Sport and a number of commercial partners.
Tickets for this fantastic event are still available for each day, offering excellent value for money and a great day out for the entire family. All tickets can be purchased through Ticketmaster at www.ticketmaster.co.uk or by calling 0844 847 2425.
