With the 2nd British International Taekwondo Championships, supported by UK Sport's World Class Events Programme, just days away, some of the world’s top taekwondo talent is set to grace the city for the event which takes place 29 - 30 August at the Manchester Regional Arena.
The Great Britain National Team will be hoping to make the most of their home advantage as well as gaining vital experience in handling the pressures of competing in front of a home crowd ahead of London 2012.
The feast of Bank Holiday weekend entertainment will feature British Olympic heroes Sarah Stevenson, Aaron Cook and Michael Harvey, competing alongside a strong Elite Academy squad, who are based just minutes from the event venue. The tournament is important preparation ahead of the World Championships in October and the results of the weekend’s action may determine who will fill the limited places at the October World Championships in Denmark.
The British Championships are another example of the wide range of world class sporting events which take place in Manchester and are jointly funded by UK Sport's National Lottery backed events programme. The city hosted the World Swimming and World Track Cycling Championships last year whilst this year will see the World Netball Series in October and the British Championships at the end of the month.
Clare Hartley, Events Consultant from UK Sport, said, “UK Sport is delighted to be supporting the British International Taekwondo Championships - we are expecting a highly competitive tournament featuring some of the world’s top performers.
“With London 2012 approaching, it is great to see how this event has progressed this year, providing British athletes, as well as volunteers and officials, valuable experience of world class competition on home soil.”
Councillor Mike Amesbury, Executive Member for Arts and Leisure for Manchester City Council, commented, “Manchester has a tradition of hosting world class sports events and we are proud to be inviting the Taekwondo community to our city once again.”
The 2009 British International Taekwondo Championships (29-30 August) will give athletes from over 30 national teams from around the world a chance to gain vital match practice with the new electronic scoring system which will be in use in October’s World Championships. First round matches will be drawn on Friday 28 August.
Tickets are still available for the 2009 British Open and can be purchased through the official online outlet www.quaytickets.com or by calling the ticket line on 0844 8154866.
