Saturday in Hyde Park saw the gathering of the world’s finest triathletes competing in the ITU World Championship Series.
Hyde Park, the venue for the 2012 Olympic triathlon was buzzing as triathlon enthusiasts and curious park visitors gathered along the route of the course and played their part in clinching gold in the men’s and bronze in the woman’s race.
Alistair Brownlee, the 21-year-old British triathlete who has stormed into international contention this season, won the elite men’s event in style and praised the home crowd for their support.
“I can’t believe it” said Brownlee, from Leeds, of his performance. “It was tough. It’s great to win at home. The crowd was unbelievable, one of the best I’ve ever raced in front of. The atmosphere was incredible."
Helen Jenkins, the defending world champion from Britain, was edged out into bronze medal place in a dramatic race to the line.
“It’s brilliant to have all the support [from the crowd] when you’re running through and when me and Jodie Stimpson are both running together at the front”, said Jenkins. “It was great to have two British triathletes up there for the first bit of the run. A finish on the podium in front of the home crowd is just great.”
“This is a great result for Britain and demonstrates the benefits of racing in front of a home crowd.” says Simon Morton, Senior Events Consultant, UK Sport.
“As well as the performance benefits over 200 officials and volunteers experienced being part of a world class event which is vital in preparation for 2012.”
