Commenting on the announcements made by the British Olympic Association and British Paralympic Association this week on the selection of 31 athletes from cycling, handball, basketball and tennis* to Team GB, and 31 athletes from wheelchair tennis and sitting volleyball to ParalympicsGB, UK Sport Chief Executive, Liz Nicholl, said:
“Congratulations to the 62 athletes from cycling, basketball, handball, tennis, wheelchair tennis and sitting volleyball who have this week been selected to represent Team GB and ParalympicsGB at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
“It is fantastic to see teams selected in three sports – women’s handball, women’s basketball and sitting volleyball – that will represent Great Britain for the very first time at an Olympic and Paralympic Games.
“Within the women’s handball team, we are also delighted to see two further athletes identified through UK Sport Talent ID programmes selected for the Games in Louise Jukes and Kathryn Fudge.
“UK Sport has invested over £312million of National Lottery, Exchequer and Team 2012 funding into Olympic and Paralympic sports and athletes for the London cycle (2009-13) and we continue to be extremely proud of their achievements as we draw ever closer to London 2012.”
