Grace Cullen 05 December 2011

Commenting on the announcement made by the British Olympic Association on Friday (2 December) on the selection of boxers Anthony Joshua, Thomas Stalker, Fred Evans, Andrew Selby and Luke Campbell to compete for Team GB, UK Sport Chief Executive, Liz Nicholl, said: “Congratulations to the five boxers who have been selected to represent Team GB at the London 2012 Olympics.

“With four world medallists among them, it has been a terrific 12 months for men’s amateur boxing in the UK, with performances suggesting we have every reason to be confident of more success next summer.

“Working in partnership with the British Amateur Boxing Association, UK Sport is proud to have supported these athletes and their support team with over £9.5 million of National Lottery, Exchequer and Team 2012 funding over the current Olympiad, which is making a very positive impact on performance and system development in the sport.”

Rob McCracken, Performance Director, GB Boxing said: "We are very grateful to UK Sport and the National Lottery who provide the funding that enables us to run a full-time programme and ensure that our boxers get the best possible support in terms of coaching, sports science and medicine.  It enables us to cater for every aspect of our athletes’ preparation and ensure they are in peak condition for the major tournaments."

Tom Stalker, GB Boxing’s 2011 world bronze medallist, said: "At GB Boxing we are very fortunate to be part of a full-time programme and get to train with the best coaches in fantastic facilities backed-up by a superb sport science and medicine team that help us with every aspect of our preparation. None of this would be possible without the backing of UK Sport and the National Lottery and myself and all the boxers are very grateful for their support.”

Commenting on the announcement made by the British Olympic Association today (6 December) on the selection of Scott Overall, Paula Radcliffe and Mara Yamauchi to compete for Team GB in the marathon event at the London 2012 Olympic Games, UK Sport Chief Executive, Liz Nicholl, said: “Congratulations to Paula, Mara and Scott, who have been selected to represent Team GB in the marathon at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

“The route for the Olympic Marathon is set to take in some of London’s most spectacular landmarks and, as with the London Marathon each year, is sure to draw huge crowds of supporters.

“The athletes selected today represent both the up and coming talent and experience within British athletics, with clear medal potential within this group.

“UK Sport is proud to have supported UK Athletics with over £25 million of National Lottery, Exchequer and Team 2012 funding over the current Olympiad.”
