Events impact measurement tool - 2010 Legacy Lives Conference

Subscribe

UK Sport 22 December 2009

UK Sport Chair, Baroness Sue Campbell CBE and Chief Operating Officer, Liz Nicholl OBE have been announced as speakers at the Legacy Lives Conference being held in London in March next year.

The conference, which focuses on the legacy benefits that can and should be created by bidding for and hosting major sporting events, explores a variety of topics including how and why sporting events can be major catalysts for change, what positive impacts bidding will bring to a city and how it is ensured that legacy benefits are delivered before, during and after an event.

Delegates will also hear about the unique potential that major sporting events have to achieve a positive impact at a national and regional level, in addition to the development of enhanced guidance to measure these impacts. Liz Nicholl is due to speak on the eventIMPACTS project, a new framework developed by UK Sport and six other public sector partners (London Development Agency, EventScotland, Yorkshire Forward, VisitBritain, North West Development Agency and Glasgow City Marketing Bureau), created to broaden and standardise the way in which the impacts of major events are measured.

The seven partners are contributing intellectual and financial resources to develop a full evaluative framework for measuring the impact of events - both sporting and cultural - that it is hoped will be a key step in developing a national framework for measuring the impacts of sporting and cultural events.

Simon Morton, Head of Events at UK Sport, said: “Major sporting events represent a strong vehicle for public sector investment based on the potential returns, but there is a real need for the public sector to develop a more sophisticated approach to capturing these impacts and assessing return on investment. This is in the rationale behind eventIMPACTS. Liz’s presentation will hopefully encourage a collective industry-wide commitment to improve the assessment of events.”

When complete, the framework will take the form of an online toolkit which will provide guidance for event organisers and funders when considering their approach to monitoring and evaluating the impacts of their events.

UK Sport, as the strategic lead agency responsible for co-ordinating bidding and staging of major events across UK, has been an international partner to the Legacy Lives Conference since it began. The Legacy Lives Conference will be held between March 3rd – March 5th 2010 at the Radisson Edwardian Hotel in Canary Wharf, London.
