UK Sport 19 August 2010

UK Sport fully support the decision by the British Volleyball Federation to concentrate funding into those disciplines they feel have the greatest potential for success in 2012.

All our awards are allocated through a funding model based on a ‘no compromise’ philosophy which targets money at those sports/disciplines most likely to deliver medal success, relative to each other.

Whilst this often means tough decisions on where the money will be allocated, the record results in Beijing show that the current approach is working.

Commenting on the decision by the British Volleyball Federation, Liz Nicholl, Chief Operating Officer at UK Sport, said: “For the London Games, UK Sport has invested record sums in volleyball, with over £4 million supporting the Olympic and Paralympic programmes.

"The decision made today by the BVF Board maximises the support for those teams with the greatest performance potential.

"This was no doubt a difficult decision for the Board, but it is one we feel took great courage and that is right from a performance perspective, especially in these economically challenging times.”
