KANUKAI JACKSON won a bronze medal on the Pommel Horse at the World Stars Gymnastics Competition, held at the Olympic Stadium in Moscow last weekend (April 28-29).
Jackson’s medal is the first ever won by a British gymnast in the 29-year-history of the renowned international competition, in which 18 nations were competing. Jackson - the 2000 British Champion - also excelled in the Rings final where he came 6th.
Meanwhile 16-year-old Holly Murdock qualified for three finals. Murdock, a recipient of Lottery funding through British Gymnastics’ World Class Performance Programme, finished 4th on the Vault, 5th on the Beam and 6th on the Floor.
Caroline Gilbert joined Murdock in the Vault final, finishing 6th.
The World Stars competition, witnessed by a huge audience, also formed part of the Russian Championships, which was dominated by the teams of Moscow (men) and St Petersburg (women). The men’s all around title was won by 1998 European Champion Alexei Bondarenko, and the women’s title went to Olympic Champion Elena Zamolodchikova.
