The Commonwealth Games Council (CGCE) for England announced this week that it has elected David Bellingham as its new Vice-Chairman.
Bellingham, who represents triathlon on the council, will work alongside Chairman Ian Emmerson in overseeing the preparations for Team England ahead of the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, which is likely to consist of almost 600 athletes and support staff. Ann Hogbin will be Chef de Mission to the team for the fourth consecutive Games, which take place from March 16-26.
Bellingham, who came through on the first vote from a field of three candidates, replaces Liz Nicholl in his new position. The Acting Chief Executive of UK Sport has stepped down mid-term, to avoid any potential conflicts of interest with her professional position there.
"I’m shocked to be elected but also excited," said the 49-year-old. "I hope because I come from a newer and smaller Commonwealth Games sport that I can bring a different perspective," he added.
CGCE Chairman Emmerson was equally excited by the appointment. "We’re delighted to welcome David to the post," he said. "We are looking forward to working with him, and I’m sure that his background in a multi-faceted sport will be of great benefit to the CGCE."
