Quarterly drug test results released
SubscribeUK Sport Press Release 25 October 2003
Figures released today by UK Sport show that 1,416 samples have been taken over the last quarter from sportsmen and women in the UK as part of the national anti-doping testing programme. Of these, 15 have been reported to governing bodies for further action.
The figures from UK Sport – the body responsible for promoting ethically fair and drug-free sport in the UK – cover the period from 1 July to 30 September 2003. The 15 findings breakdown as four for stimulants, seven for anabolic agents, one for marijuana and three for failure to comply with request for testing.
Richard Callicott, Chief Executive of UK Sport, said: "The testing programme in the UK continues to be one of the most rigorous in the world. We aim to maintain this status by working with all sports to ensure that appropriate levels of testing are in place. This is essential in order for the public to have confidence in the performance of our sportsmen and women."
During the first six months of the year (April-September 2003) a total of 2,723 have been carried out by UK Sport. Of these, 1,761 (64.7%) have taken place at events with 962 (35.3%) taken out-of-competition either at squad training sessions or as part of the 'anywhere, anytime’ testing programme.
Governing bodies receiving most tests during this period are the Football Association (339), British Weight Lifters’ Association (299) and UK Athletics (256).
