A round-up of the weekend's Great British performances
The British triathlon squad, who are currently based in Stellenbosch at a warm weather training camp, traveled to the Western Cape for the South African National Championships on March 3.
In the women’s event South African Trudi Saunders made up a sixteen second deficit following the swim leg to capture the title in 2hr 13m 45s. Great Britain’s Michelle Dillon finished just over a minute behind Saunders in second place, with reigning world junior champion Anneliese Heard, also of Great Britain, taking an impressive third place.
Meanwhile in the men’s event Tim Don made the perfect start to his year, taking the men’s title in 1hr 57m 06s. Fellow Briton Marc Jenkins was less than a minute adrift in second place. Further good performances followed from the men’s squad, with Stuart Hayes coming home sixth, and Craig Twigg finishing in eighth position.
The British squad will remain at the training camp in Stellenbosch until mid-March, whereupon they will return home to concentrate on the early season races in Japan, USA and Portugal.
Elsewhere, after close consultation with the organising club and the Guernsey Agriculture and Countryside Board, the Auto-Cycle Union (ACU) has informed the Federation Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) that due to increasing outbreaks of Foot and Mouth disease throughout Great Britain, the British Round of the Individual World Trials Championship will not be staged on the island of Guernsey on the weekend of March 23-24.
The ACU has asked the FIM to consider restaging the event later in the year.
David Millar of Great Britain made a strong finish in cycling’s gruelling Tour of Valencia. In the final stage Millar, riding for the Cofidis team, came home in fourth place, nineteen seconds adrift of the stage winner Viatcheslav Ekimov of Russia.
The overall Tour title went to Swiss star Fabien Jeker after a thrilling final day. Jeker managed to haul in Michael Boogerd of the Netherlands to win by just one second after more than 16 hours of racing.
And Greg Rusedski took his first ATP tennis title in two years with a comprehensive 6-3 6-4 win over Andre Agassi in the final of the San Jose Open.
It was Agassi’s first defeat this year, and gave Rusedski his tenth career title.
