The Road to Athens - Sarah Wilhelmy
SubscribeSarah Wilhelmy 27 February 2001
SINCE RETURNING from Sydney in October of last year, my winter training began soon after in November.
The last 4 months has proved extremely hard, as I have not had a full winter’s training for a few years due to injury, so training 6 days a week at a high intensity has been very tiring. I train in North London, which means a 90-mile round trip 4 days a week. The athletes in the group that I train with, under the guidance of Mike Macfarlane, are all very talented - so training with them is very important and the long drive is well worth it.
In February the training intensity has increased significantly - the weights sessions have been made harder, and the track sessions longer and faster. I consulted a nutritionist to help with the fatigue and to make sure that I was fuelling my body correctly.
THIS PROVED very beneficial as the consultation showed that I was lacking in certain vitamins, and that I did need to make slight changes to my diet. These changes should help with the fatigue and enable me to continue to train at a higher level.
All the preparations are now underway to go to Los Angeles in April for a month of warm-weather training, so finally there is light at the end of the tunnel and the cold training nights will soon come to an end!
The World Class Performance Plan has meant that much of the burden of the cost of the trip has been lifted, and so I can be there for longer and spend more time with my training group and coach. Just over a month to go…
Next week… Tim Brabants, Olympic canoeing-hopeful
