JAMIE BAULCH is out to break the 46-second mark for the 400 metres at the Energizer Flanders meet in Ghent on Friday evening.
Baulch's incentive is the second and final 400m place in the Great Britain team for the 8th IAAF World Indoor Championships in Lisbon next month. The 27-year-old from Cardiff is desperate to qualify for Lisbon, so he can defend the title that he won in Japan in 1999.
Daniel Caines is already assured of one of the two spots in the team, following his victory at the British trials earlier this year. Baulch faces a battle with Mark Hylton, a fellow World Class Performance Programme athlete, for the remaining place.
Hylton finished second to Caines at the trials, and in doing so ran 46.24s, his fastest time over 400m since 1997. But Baulch is hoping to better 46s in Belgium this evening and show the selectors he is the man to join Caines in Lisbon.
Meanwhile many of the country's finest cross country runners will be going head-to-head at their respective national championships - in England at Maiden Castle, Durham, venue of the 1995 IAAF World Championships; in Scotland at Beach Park, Irvine; and in Wales at Heath Park, Cardiff.
The races in England and Scotland take place on Saturday, with Wales following on Sunday. Northern Ireland's national championships are being staged next weekend at the University of Ulster.
THIS WEEKEND also sees the climax of both the English and Scottish national curling championships, being held in Glasgow and Perth in Scotland respectively. The British national squash championships conclude in Manchester, and England's cricketers continue their fight in response to Sri Lanka's massive first innings total in the First Test in Galle.
