Coomber takes Skeleton World Cup title

GREAT BRITAIN’S Alex Coomber won the FIBT Women’s Skeleton Bobsleigh World Cup title for the second successive year after the final event of the season in Park City, Utah.
The victory was sweet revenge for Coomber, who lost her title of World Champion earlier this month to Switzerland's Maya Pedersen by a tiny margin in Calgary.
Further success beckons for Coomber, who only began competing in the sport four years ago. Her employers, the RAF, have given Coomber an 18-month sabbatical away from her job as intelligence officer to build on her potential.
The Salt Lake City 2002 Winter Olympics will be Coomber’s main target, but she is under no illusions as to the work ahead. A severe summer training schedule and next season's World Cup races ensure that she will be kept busy right up to the Games.
THE SPORT, which involves high speeds and little physical protection, hasn’t lured Coomber into a false sense of security: "I still feel a twinge of fear at the top of a run, but it's more to do with being nervous of making errors."
But her recent successes have raised her confidence compared with earlier days: "I remember my first run being very frightening because it was a complete step into the unknown."
